Bergstrom Air Force Base was a United States Air Force base located in Austin, Texas. It was originally established in 1942 as Del Valle Army Air Base and was later renamed Bergstrom Army Airfield in 1943, in honor of Captain John August Earl Bergstrom, a World War I pilot from Austin.
During World War II, Bergstrom served as a training base for B-25 Mitchell bomber crews. After the war, it transitioned to a Strategic Air Command (SAC) base and played a key role in the defense of the United States during the Cold War.
In 1993, the base was transferred to the Air Combat Command and continued to operate as an active-duty Air Force base until it was closed in 1996 as part of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process. The land was transferred to the city of Austin and is now known as Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
Today, the former Bergstrom Air Force Base is home to the 136th Airlift Wing of the Texas Air National Guard and serves as an important hub for both civilian and military air operations in the Austin area.
